The full blood count as an ancillary test to support the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis
Internal Medicine Journal Dec 21, 2017
Oh LJ, et al. - This research was conducted in order to analyze if indices derived from the full blood count including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), were related to a positive biopsy in patients with suspected giant cell arteritis. In order to support the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis prior to biopsy, the presence of a thrombocytosis and high NLR, PLR, ESR and CRP could be useful. It was revealed that the presence of a thrombocytosis was a stronger predictor of a positive temporal artery biopsy than ESR. Hence, the results of a full blood count could aid in speculating the tendency of a positive temporal artery biopsy in patients with suspected giant cell arteritis.
