The frequency of weigh-ins, weight intentionality and management, and eating among male collegiate athletes
Eating Behaviours Sep 29, 2020
Walsh JA, et al. - In order to examine weight, weigh-ins, and weight pressures among male athletes, researchers here examined the weight environment and practices of NCAA (ie, Divisions I, II, III) collegiate male athletes from 19 different sports (eg, basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, wrestling). In particular, 698 male athletes were surveyed concerning frequency and circumstances of team weigh-ins, weight management behaviors, weight intentions, caloric intake, and guidance received for healthfully managing weight and eating. Overall, few male athletes reported undergoing mandatory team weigh-ins. However, within this subgroup required to engage in them, weigh-ins are frequent (and often public). Primarily, exercise and caloric restriction are used by male athletes to prepare for weigh-ins. Desire to change weight was expressed by most male athletes (85.2%), especially to gain lean muscle. Receipt of healthy weight and nutrition guidance from qualified sources was reported in most athletes.
