The effects of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet on metabolic risk factors in patients with chronic disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Jun 15, 2021
Lari A, Sohouli MH, Fatahi S, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the potential impacts of the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet on metabolic risk factors in patients suffering from chronic disease. Relevant randomized controlled trials were identified via a systematic literature search. Final analysis included 54 clinical trials. The DASH diet was shown to have a significant lowering impact on body weight, BMI, and waist circumference, as well as for systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure, vs control groups. A significant reduction in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) levels, but not in high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), triglyceride, and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL-C), was seen following the DASH diet. Overall, findings demonstrate the feasibility of the DASH diet as a strategy for weight loss and for control of blood pressure and hypercholesterolemia.
