Arthritis Care & Research May 02, 2020
Casartelli NC, Valenzuela PL, Maffiuletti NA, et al. - The present study was conducted to appraise the highest available evidence provided by randomised controlled trials (RCT) on the effectiveness of hip arthroscopy vs physical therapy in patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). Researchers carried out to search databases or MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus until 1st October 2019. Eligible studies were RCTs in which FAIS individuals who had undergone hip arthroscopy or physical therapy. A random effects model was applied to estimate the pooled mean difference in International Hip Outcome Tool ‐ 33 scores within and between the treatment arms. The outcomes of this research demonstrate that in FAIS individuals, both hip arthroscopy and physical therapy resulted in statistically and clinically significant short‐term improvements in hip pain, function and quality of life. At follow‐up, hip arthroscopy was found to be statistically superior to physical therapy in improving the outcome, even whether it may not be diagnosed by patients.
