The effect of psychosocial factors on outcomes in patients with rotator cuff tears: A systematic review
Arthroscopy Sep 13, 2019
Kennedy P, et al. - This systematic review was undertaken to determine if psychosocial factors influence patient-reported outcomes in people with rotator cuff tears or after rotator cuff repair. To evaluate study quality and risk of bias, the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used. Of 980 articles identified, 15 met the criteria for inclusion and exclusion. According to results, most studies support that psychosocial factors have a significant influence on the level of preoperative patients' disability and pain. However, even with significant psychosocial confounders, 3 out of 9 studies showed significant improvements in postoperative pain and function. However, these studies do support a direct relationship in rotator cuff surgery between patient expectations and outcomes.
