The effect of perceived social support during early pregnancy on depressive symptoms at 6 weeks postpartum: A prospective study
BMC Psychiatry Aug 06, 2019
Gan Y, et al. - Researchers sought to prospectively examine how perceived social support during early pregnancy is associated with postpartum depressive symptoms in a cohort of 3310 women. ENRICHD Social Support Instrument and the postpartum Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) were used to assess perceived social support and postpartum depression, respectively. The cohort had postpartum depressive symptom prevalence of 11.4% (EPDS cutoff ≥ 10). Outcomes revealed significant correlations between low perceived social support and postpartum depressive symptoms. Early intervention may allow protecting against depression symptoms at 6 weeks postpartum.
