The effect of N-acetylcysteine on mechanical fatigue resistance of antibiotic-loaded bone cement
Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research Jun 07, 2018
Sukur E, et al. - Authors assessed the impact of N-acetylcysteine alone and in combination with the most commonly used antibiotic-loaded bone cement mixtures. The cement’s mechanical resistance was not significantly affected by the addition of N-acetylcysteine to teicoplanin-loaded bone cement. This potentially led to a new avenue for preventing and treating the peri-prosthetic joint infection. Therefore a consideration could be made regarding the N-acetylcysteine being an alternative agent to be added to antibiotic-loaded bone cement mixtures used in the prevention of peri-prosthetic joint infection.
