The effect of multiple vitrectomies and its indications on intraocular pressure
BMC Ophthalmology Aug 18, 2019
Kovacic H, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers explored the connection between different indications for trans pars plana vitrectomies (PPV’s) and the intraocular pressure (IOP) and the impact of multiple PPV’s on the IOP, as well as investigate whether there were variations in the number of IOP-lowering medications or surgeries before and after PPV. Participants in the study were all patients that underwent at least one PPV in the period from 2001 till 2014 at the clinic. Of 1072 PPV’s 447 eyes fulfilled the criteria for inclusion. After PPV with indication retinal detachment, the IOP increases considerably. This relationship was not found for other indications for PPV. Also, after PPV, the risk of IOP-lowering surgery was greater, but not distinct among the signs of PPV. The IOP should be closely supervised after PPV, as the risk of secondary glaucoma may be greater.
