The effect of biochemical remission on bone metabolism in Cushing syndrome: A two‐year follow‐up study

Journal of Bone and Mineral Research Apr 26, 2020

Braun LT, Fazel J, Zopp S, et al. - Given that endogenous Cushing syndrome (CS) is a rare cause of secondary osteoporosis and the long‐term consequences for bone metabolism following successful surgical treatment remain largely unknown, researchers evaluated BMD and fracture rates in 89 patients with confirmed CS at the time of diagnosis and two years following successful tumor resection. For contrast, 71 sex‐, age‐ and BMI‐matched patients were studied in whom CS had been omitted. No specific osteoanabolic treatment was obtained in any of the patients. Data reported that 69% of the patients had low bone mass (mean T score = ‐1.4±1.1) at time of diagnosis. Findings demonstrate that in the majority of patients, the phase immediately after surgical remission from endogenous CS is characterized by a high bone turnover rate resulting in a striking net increase in BMD.
