The difficulty of improving quality of life in COPD patients with depression and associated factors
International Journal of COPD Oct 16, 2019
Lim JU, Park CK, Kim TH, et al. - Researchers analyzed multicenter cohort data to determine how Korean patients with COPD are clinically influenced by depressive symptoms and to identify the clinical factors related to depression in these patients. All the participants were assessed initially via pulmonary function tests, 6 min walk distance (6MWD), the COPD Assessment Test, and the COPD-specific version of the St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ-C). A Beck Depression Inventory-II score ≥ 17 established significant depression. Findings revealed the presence of depression in a considerable proportion of patients with COPD. Factors that displayed significant relation to depression included a high SGRQ-C score, low BMI, and low 6MWD. In this subgroup, improving quality of life was difficult, and therefore, clinicians are recommended to be more active in screening cases with significant depression.
