The differences in placental pathology and neonatal outcome in singleton vs twin gestation complicated by small for gestational age
Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics Oct 08, 2018
Barber E, et al. - Dichorionic diamniotic twins and singleton pregnancies complicated by small for gestational age (SGA) diagnosis were compared regarding placental histopathology and neonatal outcome. On reviewing medical files and placental pathology reports from all deliveries between 2008 and 2017 of SGA neonates, (birthweight < 10th percentile), researchers identified more maternal vascular malperfusion lesions (MVM) in placentas from SGA singleton pregnancies vs placentas from SGA twin pregnancies. This suggests that abnormal fetal growth in singleton and twin gestations involve different mechanisms.
