The diagnostic value of human epididymis protein 4 as a novel biomarker in patients with renal dysfunction
International Urology and Nephrology Jul 18, 2018
Wang L, et al. - Researchers assessed if human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) has diagnostic utility in acute and chronic renal dysfunction. They also analyzed the correlation between HE4 levels and the results of routine renal function tests. They looked for evidence to establish HE4 as a novel biomarker of renal injury and its appropriate application as a marker of ovarian cancer. This study was performed on hospitalized patients with different causes of renal damage. Serum samples were taken and using chemiluminescence, HE4 serum levels were detected. Using conventional clinical chemical methods, they assessed the levels of serum creatinine, urea, and cystatin C. Findings suggested that HE4 represents a potential biomarker of kidney injury in acute and chronic renal dysfunction. Awareness regarding this is important on clinicians' end when using HE4 to diagnose ovarian cancer.
