The clinico‐epidemiological characteristics and therapeutic experience of 152 patients with cutaneous sporotrichosis: A 10‐year retrospective study from India
International Journal of Dermatology Dec 08, 2020
Sharma R, Mahajan VK, Chauhan PS, et al. - Given that cutaneous sporotrichosis is a chronic granulomatous subcutaneous mycosis caused by dimorphic yeast Sporothrix schenckii, a common saprophyte of decaying wood, hay, sphagnum moss and soil, researchers sought to analyze clinico‐epidemiological and therapeutic aspects of sporotrichosis in the clinic. Medical records of 152 (M:F 52:100) patients with cutaneous sporotrichosis managed during 2010–2019 were retrospectively analyzed. All individuals were involved in agricultural activities, and 63.2% were aged 21–60 years. According to findings, cutaneous sporotrichosis often affects people during their active years of life. The infection-predisposing injuries are often forgotten. Fixed and lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis involving extremities remains a common form. Safe and effective treatment is possible with SSKI alone or in combination with itraconazole. In patients with pre-existing hypothyroidism or SSKI intolerance, itraconazole is preferable.
