The clinical efficacy of leukocyte-poor platelet-rich plasma in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Nov 21, 2020

Zhao D, Han YH, Pan JK, et al. - This study was intended to conduct a meta-analysis of only studies evaluating leukocyte-poor platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to evaluate whether PRP promotes and improves the effects of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Researchers performed a comprehensive search of the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases to assess the effectiveness of leukocyte-poor PRP in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. The analysis included 10 randomized controlled trials involving a total of 742 patients. The results of this study illustrated that leukocyte-poor PRP can significantly decrease the postoperative retear rate in the medium and long term regardless of the tear size and methods used for rotator cuff repair. Nevertheless, the findings revealed that the use of leukocyte-poor PRP in terms of postoperative pain and patient-reported outcomes failed to exhibit clinically meaningful impacts.
