The cardiometabolic risk profile of young adults with diabetes in the U.S.
Diabetes Care Jun 28, 2019
Saydah SH, et al. - Via demographic data and cardiometabolic risk profiles (adiposity, blood pressure, serum lipids, healthy eating, physical activity [PA], and exposure to tobacco smoke) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2016, researchers studied young adults with and without diabetes and compared the risk profiles of younger vs older (aged ≥45 years) adults with diabetes. In both age groups, adults with diabetes had greater adiposity, hypertension, and cholesterol levels, and lower healthy eating and leisure-time PA rates. However, there were greater differences between young adults vs older adults, after demographic and health insurance adjustment, in high cholesterol and adiposity according to diabetes status. According to findings, young adults with diabetes have high rates of cardiometabolic risk factors that may result in greater disease prevalence and mortality rates as they age.
