The burden of adult asthma in Finland: Impact of disease severity and eosinophil count on health care resource utilization
Journal of Asthma Jul 12, 2019
Viinanen A, et al. - In this non-interventional, retrospective registry study, researchers analyzed data from adult patients referred for specialist asthma care in Southwest Finland, to determine health care resource utilization (HCRU) and related expenses by disease severity and blood eosinophil count (BEC). This analysis included 14,398 patients, with 388 having severe asthma at index. Total- and asthma-related outpatient visits, inpatient days, emergency room visits and costs per patient year were higher among patients with severe vs non-severe asthma; more outpatient visits were reported for those with BEC ≥300 cells/μL vs <300 cells/μL. Patients with severe eosinophilic asthma had the highest all recorded HCRU and associated costs. In Finland, a substantial burden related to severe and/or eosinophilic asthma was reported for adults.
