The auroKPro vs the Boston type I keratoprosthesis: 5-year clinical outcomes in 134 cases of bilateral corneal blindness
American Journal of Ophthalmology Mar 29, 2019
Basu S, et al. - Investigators studied 134 eyes of 130 individuals with severe bilateral corneal blindness to estimate the clinical consequences of Boston type I keratoprosthesis (Boston Kpro) (with its low-cost version) vs the auroKPro. They noted limbal stem cell deficiency as the most common indication (60.5%) for surgery after multiple failed grafts (35%). They recorded similar overall anatomical retention rates in the Boston Kpro (70.5%) and auroKPro (62.5%) groups. Significantly more common complications like intra-operative device breakage (7%) and post-operative extrusions (12.5%) were reported with the auroKPro. They suggested the auroKpro as an alternative to the Boston Kpro when affordability or availability of the Boston Kpro acted as a limiting factor.
