The associations between screen time-based sedentary behavior and depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Public Health Nov 21, 2019
Wang X, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from 12 cross-sectional studies and 7 longitudinal studies, to assess the risk of depression in relation to screen time-based sedentary behavior (ST-SB), to prompt the development of prevention and intervention strategies. The eligible studies were identified from electronic databases of Medline, Embase and the Cochrane Library. The pooled OR was found to be 1.28 with high heterogeneity (I2 = 89%). A significantly higher risk of depression was observed in those reporting more sedentary behavior (SB) vs those who reported less SB. Female groups had the pooled OR of 1.18 when the gender was stratified while no significant link was seen in males. Findings revealed a link of ST-SB with the risk of depression and variations in the effects were evident in different populations.
