The association of overhydration with chronic inflammation in chronic maintenance hemodiafiltration patients
Hemodialysis International Jul 12, 2019
Zsom L, et al. - In this cross-sectional analysis of 87 prevalent end-stage renal disease patients on chronic maintenance hemodiafiltration (vintage 66.5 ± 57.1 months), researchers focused on the link between overhydration and chronic inflammation. They determined the degree of percent overhydration (OH%). The overhydrated (OH% ≥ 15%) group was compared to the euvolemic (OH% < 15%) group with respect to levels of inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), serum albumin, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and hemoglobin red cell distribution width (RDW). The markers of inflammation between euvolemic (OH% <15%) vs severely overhydrated (OH% > 20%) groups varied significantly. According to findings, OH was common in a prevalent hemodiafiltration cohort and showed correlations with various inflammatory markers including CRP, serum albumin, RDW, and NLR.
