The association of intraocular pressure with obesity and cardiometabolic risk in a young farmworker population
Journal of Glaucoma Jan 29, 2021
Reddy A, Halenda K, Cromer P, et al. - Since elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is a known risk factor for glaucomatous optic neuropathy and is suspected to be correlated with obesity and cardiometabolic diseases, researchers sought to explore the connection between IOP and obesity and cardiometabolic risk in a young farmworker population. Between 2013 and 2017, farmworker data were obtained from the annual Costa-Layman Health Fair. The mean IOP was 15.5 mmHg in the farmworker population (n = 346) and the prevalence of ocular hypertension (IOP > 21 mmHg) was 5.5%. Obesity measures including BMI and waist circumference, are associated with higher IOP and are correlated with DBP. Such results indicate that for elevated IOP, BMI is an independent risk factor.
