The association between mental demands at the workplace and cognitive functioning: The role of the big five personality traits
Aging and Mental Health Jun 02, 2019
Hussenoeder FS, et al. - Given the possible preventive effect of mental demands at the workplace against cognitive decline, researchers examined how neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness and conscientiousness, would affect the beneficial effects of workplace stimulation on cognitive outcomes. Using data from the population-based LIFE-Adult-Study (n = 6529), they assessed cognitive outcomes via the Trail-Making Test (TMTA, TMTB) and the Verbal Fluency Test and determined personality via the Personality Adjective List (16 AM). As per findings, associations between high mental demands at work and better cognitive functioning in old age were not modified by the personality; however, a tendency for offsetting the effects of mental demands was noted with high levels of openness and conscientiousness.
