The association between age at menarche and later risk of gestational diabetes is mediated by insulin resistance
Acta Diabetologica May 31, 2018
Petry CJ, et al. - In the prospective Cambridge Baby Growth Study, the researchers examined whether average age at menarche was associated with future gestational diabetes (GDM) risk and raised glucose concentrations in pregnancy, and how such associations relate to changes in indices of insulin sensitivity and pancreatic β-cell function/insulin secretion. They used polynomial logistic and linear regression models to relate menarche timing to the risk of gestational diabetes, both unadjusted and adjusted for the Homeostasis Model Assessments of insulin resistance (HOMA IR) and pancreatic β-cell function (HOMA B) at week 28 of pregnancy. Results of this study suggested the relationships between age at menarche and risk of gestational diabetes and raised pregnancy glucose concentrations could be mediated by insulin resistance.
