Tear and aqueous humour cytokine profile in primary open-angle glaucoma
Acta Ophthalmologica Feb 15, 2020
Burgos-Blasco B, Vidal-Villegas Beatriz, Saenz-Frances F, et al. - This cross-sectional study was conducted by researchers to determine the concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines in tear and aqueous humour of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients compared with healthy controls. This investigation was carried out at the Hospital Clınico San Carlos in Madrid. From 29 healthy controls and 27 POAG patients, tear and aqueous humour samples were collected. An increase in IL-4, IL-12, IL-15, FGF-basic, and VEGF was noted in tear samples of glaucoma patients, as well as a decrease in MIP-1a relative to the control group. The different profiles of patients with POAG's inflammatory marker expression and healthy controls support the pathology's inflammatory activity, suggesting that some of them could be used as possible biomarkers of this disease.
