Systemic lupus erythematosus is a risk factor for atrial fibrillation: A nationwide, population-based study
Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology Online Dec 12, 2019
Lim S, Bae E, Han K, et al. - From the Korean National Health Insurance Service National Sample Cohort database between 2008 and 2014, Individuals with SLE (n = 21,143) without former atrial fibrillation (AF) were chosen in order to examine the incidence and clinical importance of AF in SLE. AF was newly discovered in 481 individuals with SLE and 619 controls. A greater incidence of AF was exhibited by younger (age < 40) people. In comparison with patients without SLE with AF and those with SLE without AF following the adjustment, SLE individuals with incidental AF had a greater mortality rate. In summary, SLE was an independent risk factor for AF development, particularly in younger people without previous AF, emphasizing the significance of cardiac evaluation in this population. Moreover, the development of AF in people with SLE was related to heightened mortality.
