Systemic contribution of inflammatory mediators to the severity of diabetic and uveitic macular edema
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Mar 18, 2021
Figueras-Roca M, Matas J, Llorens V, et al. - This cross-sectional observational study was undertaken to determine if serum cytokine and growth factor levels are correlated with diabetic macular edema (DME) and uveitic macular edema (UME) objective severity. The sample consisted of 81 patients (1 eye/patient) with DME (n = 48) and UME (n = 33). Findings suggested that the severity of DME and UME can be influenced by peripheral blood IL-6 and IL-8 levels. IL-8 even appears to be independently linked to central macular thickness and macular volume in UME cases. Such systemic implications might enforce DME and UME personalized diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
