Systematic review and meta-analysis of the association of combined oral contraceptives on the risk of venous thromboembolism: The role of the progestogen type and estrogen dose
Thrombosis Research Mar 24, 2018
Oedingen C, et al. - This study entailed the quantification of the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) taking into account both progestogen type and estrogen dose. A substantially increased VTE risk was noted due to all combined oral contraceptives (COC) compared to levonorgestrel with 30–40 μg ethinylestradiol. Variation was noted in the association depending on the progestogen type and the dose of estrogen. Furthermore, it was observed that the prescription of COC with the lowest possible dose of ethinylestradiol could aid in avoiding VTE cases among young, healthy women.
