Symptom clusters in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis

Chaiviboontham S, et al. - Researchers performed this descriptive study to investigate the symptom clusters of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients receiving hemodialysis. From two dialysis centre of the university hospital and specialized kidney hospital in Bangkok, a total of 150 ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis were selected. Participants were examined using Personal Information Questionnaire and Dialysis Symptom Index-THAI. Experts identified 8 clusters of symptoms: 1) gastrointestinal, 2) musculoskeletal and fluid volume 3) neurological 4) irritation of the mucous membranes and skin 5) depression 6) sleep disturbance 7) sexual 8) anemic. In addition to increasing awareness, these data can be used by health-care providers to create the intervention to manage unpleasant symptoms which result in improvement in the quality of life.
