Survival and progression in synucleinopathy phenotypes with parkinsonism
Mayo Clinic Proceedings Aug 15, 2019
Savica R, et al. - Researchers recognized 433 individuals residing in Olmsted County, MI, who received a diagnostic code of parkinsonism from January 1, 1991 through December 31, 2010, in order to contrast survival by the presenting parkinsonism symptoms at diagnosis among individuals with incident clinically diagnosed synucleinopathies. In comparison with the bradykinesia/rigidity-only group, the risk of death was lower in the tremor-predominant group, and the risk of death in the bradykinesia/rigidity-only group was significantly greater when compared with the tremor-predominant group and compared with tremor prior to the bradykinesia. Longer survival was noted in individuals with tremor as a presenting symptom. Moreover, on the contrary, across all types of synucleinopathies, the presence of bradykinesia/rigidity as a presenting symptom was associated with decreased survival.
