Surgical intervention for FAI can lead to improvements in both hip and back function in patients with co-existing chronic back pain at one year-follow up
Arthroscopy Dec 05, 2020
Sun Y, Thompson KA, Darden C, et al. - This study was undertaken to ascertain whether individuals with coexisting lumbar back pain experience back pain improvement after undergoing hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Researchers included a total of 68 individuals who had undergone hip arthroscopy between November 2016 and October 2018. They noted the modified Harris Hip Score (MHHS) and Nonarthritic Hip Score preoperatively and at 1-year follow up. They recorded oswestry disability score, which quantifies disability from lower back pain, and visual analog scale from the Hip-Spine cohort alone. They conducted statistical analysis applying paired sample t-tests with p ≤ 0.05 considered significant. This study’s findings demonstrate that for FAI, surgical intervention can lead to improvements in hip and back pain in individuals with co-existing lumbar pathology.
