Suicide prediction among men and women with depression: A population-based study
Journal of Psychiatric Research Aug 15, 2021
Jiang T, Nagy D, Rosellini AJ, et al. - This study’s findings demonstrate that psychiatric disorders and their associated medications were strongly indicative of suicide risk. It was shown that suicide risk in persons with depression was correlated with anti-inflammatory medications (e.g., acetaminophen) prescriptions, which are applied to treat chronic pain and illnesses. As per the findings, machine learning may advance our ability to predict suicide deaths.
Between January 1, 1995, and December 31, 2015, researchers performed a case-cohort study in Denmark.
A high risk of suicide was found among those who have prescribed other analgesics and antipyretics (i.e., non-opioid analgesics such as acetaminophen), prescribed hypnotics and sedatives, and diagnosed with poisoning in men with depression (n = 96; risk = 81%).
The study found an increased risk of suicide among those who have prescribed other analgesics and antipyretics, anxiolytics, hypnotics, and sedatives but were not diagnosed with poisoning nor cerebrovascular diseases in women with depression (n = 338; risk = 58%).
