Clinical Gerontologist Nov 15, 2019
Johnson CC, et al. - In this study involving veterans with cancer, researchers explored factors related to suicidal ideation (SI). They asked 175 participants referred for psychological assessment to complete measures of pain, sleep, depressive, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms. Thoughts of killing oneself in the past 2 weeks or during clinical interview, as endorsed on paper-and-pencil questionnaire, defined SI. In this study sample, SI was reported by 25.1%. Higher ratings on measures of depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms were seen in veterans with SI vs those without SI. Overall, SI was predicted by anhedonia and depressed mood in addition to other risk factors among in this population.
