Suicidal behavior, opioid use disorder, and behavioral health treatment: Prevalence and correlates among adults in the United States 2015–2018
Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment Apr 20, 2021
Ali MM, Dubenitz J., et al. - In view of the previous research describing a higher rate of co-occurring mental health conditions among individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD), researchers investigated individuals with OUD using the 2015–2018 National Survey of Drug Use and Health, for suicidal behavior (suicidal ideation and/or attempts) and utilization of behavioral health services. Per findings, individuals with OUD are at high risk of suicidal behavior; nearly a quarter of the individuals experienced suicidal ideation or attempt. No substance use disorder or mental health treatment was recorded in 43% of the individuals with OUD. The risk of suicidal behavior was reduced among individuals with OUD by 28% - 49% in correlation with utilization of behavioral health treatment.
