Subjects with familial hypercholesterolemia have lower aortic valve area and higher levels of inflammatory biomarkers
Journal of Clinical Lipidology Dec 23, 2020
Hovland A, Narverud I, Qyri LKL, et al. - This study was conducted to evaluate the association between the concentration of Lp(a), measurements of the aortic valve including velocities and valve area, and circulating inflammatory biomarkers in adult familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) individuals and controls. Researchers conducted a cross-sectional study examining aortic valve measures by cardiac ultrasound and inflammatory markers were evaluated in non-fasting blood samples. In this study, 64 FH subjects with high (n = 29) or low (n = 35) Lp(a), and 14 healthy controls were included. In comparison with healthy control subjects, middle-aged, intensively treated FH individuals have higher aortic valve velocity, lower aortic valve area (AVA), and higher levels of the platelet-derived markers CD40L, PF4, NAP2, and RANTES. The data exhibited that after multiple linear regression, aortic valve findings were not significant, whereas the higher levels of platelet-derived markers were maintained.
