Subclinical hypothyroidism and coronary revascularization after coronary artery bypass grafting
The American Journal of Cardiology Sep 13, 2018
Kong SH, et al. - In patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH), researchers assessed the long-term cardiovascular outcomes post-coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). They performed a retrospective review in 222 euthyroid and 36 SCH patients who had CABG, focusing on all-cause and cardiovascular-related mortality, and cardiovascular events. Findings showed a link between preoperative SCH and less favorable cardiovascular outcomes, particularly coronary revascularization following CABG. Moreover, significantly increased risks of unstable angina and coronary revascularization were seen in SCH patients who developed postoperative atrial fibrillation (AF). Overall, long-term outcomes after CABG could be predicted via preoperative assessment of thyroid function.
