Study of the prevalence and patterns of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor use among sexually active Egyptian males: A National Cross-sectional Survey

Abd-Allah Attia A, et al. - Via a cross-sectional survey performed in Egypt from November 2015 to June 2016, the experts the prevalence and patterns of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor use among sexually active Egyptian males. Through a questionnaire designed, sexually active adult men were surveyed. Using the abridged 5-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function, all the individuals were assessed. A total of 3,000 sexually active Egyptian males took part in this study, out of which, 946 detailed that they used phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE5Is) at least once, and 2,054 had never used them. The majority of those who practiced PDE5Is use took them for recreational objectives chiefly for pleasure and to enhance the term/frequency of the intercourse. Only 26.05% used PDE5Is to tackle erectile dysfunction (one of the most common sexual disorders globally). The main origin of getting PDE5Is was friends, relatives, and colleagues. Nearly 25.16% of users received the drug by themselves, and 6.66% had the drug prescribed by a pharmacist. Only 5.39% of males received the drug following specialist physician consultation. The most commonly used PDE5I was sildenafil and even in the presence of erectile dysfunction, most of the users used them in an occasional way, while 11.95% consumed the drug in a consistent manner for every intercourse. Hence, PDE5Is were often used by the Egyptian male population, and most of them appeared to take them as recreational medications.
