Stromal tiny black dots, like “sugar-coated”, of von Kossa stain is a diagnostic clue to hyalinizing trabecular tumor of the thyroid gland
Pathology International Feb 02, 2018
Hino R, et al. - Hyalinizing trabecular tumor (HTT) is a rare low-grade tumor, and a prominent feature is the basement membranous stroma. Herein, using von Kossa special staining, researchers examined HTT samples to ultimately test their assumption that such characteristic stromal findings of HTT are related to calcium deposition. For the first time ever, it was demonstrated in this work that on von Kossa staining, HTT revealed abundant tiny black dots, like a “sugar-coated” appearance. This finding can be a useful diagnostic clue to HTT.
