Stroke unit admission is associated with better outcome and lower mortality in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage
European Journal of Neurology Feb 11, 2020
Ungerer MN, Ringleb P, Reuter B, et al. - Because there is no clear consensus among current guidelines on the preferred admission ward—intensive care units (ICUs) vs stroke units (SUs)—for patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), researchers compared outcomes among 10,811 consecutive non-comatose patients with ICH according to admission ward (ICUs, SUs, and normal wards [NWs]). Compared with ICUs and NWs, treatment in SUs were linked to better functional outcomes and decreased mortality. These outcomes support current guidelines for treating patients with intracranial hemorrhage in SUs or NICUs, and also suggest that some patients may benefit further from NICU treatment.
