Stepping up infection control measures in ophthalmology during the novel coronavirus outbreak: An experience from Hong Kong
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology Mar 11, 2020
Lai THT, et al. - In this report, the researchers sought to share their local experience of stepping up ophthalmology infection control measures to reduce coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection among healthcare workers as well as patients. In 2003, Hong Kong was hit hard by the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus, which cost 299 Hong Kong people their lives. A total of 405 healthcare workers have been infected and eight of them succumbed to SARS. They hope their initial experience in stepping up infection control measures in ophthalmology for COVID-19 infection will help ophthalmologists globally prepare for the future epidemic or pandemic in the population. Nevertheless, due to differences in severity of outbreaks and individual hospital settings in different localities, they recommend that ophthalmologists collaborate with their local infection control experts for a thorough risk assessment before deciding on the extent of infection control measures to be implemented in their own clinical settings. Considering that the novel coronavirus infection is still on the upward trajectory, it is of paramount importance to remain vigilant and to begin to take appropriate measures to prevent its spread.
