Statins and the risk of intracerebral haemorrhage in patients with stroke: Systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry Nov 14, 2018
Ziff OJ, et al. – In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers studied the evidence of statin therapy on intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and other clinical outcomes in patients with previous ischemic stroke (IS) or ICH. A total of 43 studies with a combined total of 317,291 patient-years of follow-up were included for analysis. According to findings, statins had no significant impact on the pooled risk ratios for recurrent ICH in patients with previous ICH. However, statins were related to significant reductions in mortality and poor functional outcome. Overall, regardless of stroke subtype, there were non-significant trends towards future ICH with the use of statins. However, this risk was eclipsed by substantial and significant improvements in mortality and functional outcome among statin users.
