Statin use and knee osteoarthritis outcomes: A longitudinal cohort study
Arthritis Care & Research Jul 17, 2019
Veronese N, et al. - In this longitudinal cohort study, researchers examined whether statin usage (including the time from baseline and the type of statin) in North American people was correlated with a lower risk of radiographic osteoarthritis (ROA), radiographic symptomatic knee OA, and pain. Osteoarthritis Initiative followed a total of 4,448 community-dwelling adults for 4 years. One thousand one hundred twenty-seven participants (25.3% of the total population) used statins at baseline. The effect of statin use on the outcomes of knee OA remains unclear, although a significantly lower risk of developing knee pain has been observed for >5 years in individuals using statins and those using atorvastatin.
