Staging of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck: Prognostic features and power of the 8th edition of the UICC staging manual
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Mar 08, 2019
Beltz A, et al. - The differences of prognostic influence between the seventh and the latest edition of TNM Classification were examined, in addition determining risk factors like extranodal extension (ENE) and lymph node ratio (LNR) for HPV-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer (OPSCC). They classified 255 patients with OPSCC as defined by the seventh and eighth edition of UICC. Determining HPV status according to p16 immunohistochemistry (IHC) revealed 41.2% of the OPSCC as p16-positive. The respective stages were better-differentiated implementing the eighth edition of UICC. In HPV-positive OPSCC, patients with a LNR ≤10% ant those with negative ENE status had significantly better overall survival (OS), using Kaplan-Meier survival curves.
