Sperm methylome alterations following yoga-based lifestyle intervention in patients of primary male infertility: A pilot study

Andrologia Mar 11, 2020

Bisht S, Banu S, Srivastava S, et al. - Researchers carried out the outcomes from our pilot study, a first of its kind analysis of the impact of the traditional practice of yoga on human sperm quality. They tried to ascertain marked improvement in sperm characteristics in individuals of idiopathic male infertility following a supervised 21-day yoga regimen. Next-generation sequencing-based methylome analysis shows changes in the sperm epigenome of these individuals. They observe that the practice of yoga is correlated with DNA methylation alterations at nearly 400 genes, 147 of which were hypermethylated while 229 were hypomethylated. These involved promoters of several genes associated with the maintenance of fertility and genomic integrity. It was reported that this new piece of work draws a direct link between positive lifestyle practices and male reproductive health.
