Socio-economic predictors of depressive symptoms around old age retirement in Swedish women and men
Aging and Mental Health May 05, 2019
Nyberg A, et al. - Researchers analyzed 907 women and 806 men from the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health in order to assess trajectories of depression around old age retirement, In addition, they investigated the predictive value of socio-economic status for the trajectories. In both genders, three largest groups had depression scores very low, low or low to mild. The fourth trajectory group included individuals with moderate to severe levels of depressive symptoms among women and individuals with moderate levels of depressive symptoms among men. All groups among men had stable depression scores across time, however, among women, the two groups with the highest depression scores showed more fluctuating patterns. At the time of retirement, no group showed a clear change in symptoms. Higher odds of belonging to trajectory groups with higher depression scores was noted in correlation to higher educational level and lower subjective social status in both genders. Lower odds of belonging to one of the trajectory groups with higher depression scores were further observed among men being married compared with the reference group.
