Social engagement pattern, health behaviors and subjective well-being of older adults: An international perspective using WHO-SAGE survey data

BMC Public Health Jan 30, 2020

Luo M, et al. - Utilizing data from the WHO Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health (SAGE Wave 1), researchers evaluated the link between social engagement and a range of health-associated behaviors and subjective well-being in older adult populations in six low- to middle-income countries. They examined 33,338 people aged 50 and older in China, Russia, India, Ghana, South Africa, and Mexico. A positive link of lower levels of social engagement with physical inactivity, prolonged sitting time, unhealthy sleep duration, perceived depression, poor self-rated health, and low quality of life was revealed. High social engagement was identified as a likely health-promoting factor in some low- to middle-income countries. Although complex and culture-specific influences of social engagement on tobacco and alcohol use and diet were noted, healthy lifestyles via positive social engagement should be promoted by implementing interventions at both individual and community levels.
