Smoking habit modulates peri-implant microbiome: A case-control study
Journal of Periodontal Research Jan 04, 2019
Pimentel SP, et al. - Researchers isolated bacterial DNA to assess the impact of the microbiome in a peri-implant environment in smokers with healthy peri-implant conditions. They observed the abundance of Fusobacterium, Tannerella and Mogibacterium in smokers whereas Actinomyces, Capnocytophaga and Streptococcus in non-smoker subjects indicating different microbiome cohesion. They conclusively indicated a relationship between the peri-implant microbiome and smoking leading to a disease-associated condition, even in clinically healthy people.
