Sleep apnea and subsequent cancer incidence
Cancer Causes and Control Aug 22, 2018
Sillah A, et al. - Researchers analyzed the association between sleep apnea and subsequent cancer incidence by using regional administrative databases and a population-based cancer registry. A cohort of adults diagnosed with sleep apnea between 2005 and 2014 was identified. Linkage to cancer registry provided first incident cancers diagnosed after sleep apnea diagnosis through 2015. Calculation of age–sex standardized cancer incidence ratios (SIRs) was carried out in order to compare the observed number of cancers among those with sleep apnea with expected population estimates over a comparable period. Findings revealed elevated cancer incidence among sleep apnea patients vs the general population. A significantly elevated incidence for kidney, melanoma, breast, and corpus uteri was reported while a lower risk for lung and colorectal cancer was evident.
