Single-center, consecutive series study of the use of a novel platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM) and beta-tricalcium phosphate in posterolateral lumbar fusion

European Spine Journal Apr 12, 2019

Callanan TC, et al. - Fifty candidates who underwent one-level to three-level posterolateral lumbar fusion procedures were examined to study the radiographic and clinical consequences of combined platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM) and beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), and bone marrow aspirate (BMA) as a graft alternative in posterolateral lumbar fusion procedures. They found radiographic fusion in 92.4% of operated levels at 1-year follow-up. Significant improvement was reported in VAS scores for both back and leg pain. A decline by 38% was recorded in the number of patients using opioid analgesics at 12-months when compared to baseline figures. They found retiring in 31 cases, although, 68% of employed subjects were able to return to work.
