Shorter and longer-term risk for non-fatal suicide attempts among male US military veterans after discharge from psychiatric hospitalization
Journal of Psychiatric Research Aug 25, 2021
Britton PC, Crasta D, Bohnert KM, et al. - Researchers herein described factors linked with shorter-term (days 1–90) and longer-term (days 91–365) risk of suicide attempts after discharge from inpatient psychiatry.
Veterans ages 18–59 and those who were hospitalized following a suicide attempt or with suicidal ideation were noted to be at the highest risk across both time frames.
Those with a dementia diagnosis were noted to be at the lowest risk across both time frames.
Individuals with substance use disorders showed an increase in risk estimates over the timeframes and those with sleep disturbance and discharged against medical advice showed a decrease.
