Journal of Psychiatric Research Aug 25, 2021

Britton PC, Crasta D, Bohnert KM, et al. - Researchers herein described factors linked with shorter-term (days 1–90) and longer-term (days 91–365) risk of suicide attempts after discharge from inpatient psychiatry.

  • Veterans ages 18–59 and those who were hospitalized following a suicide attempt or with suicidal ideation were noted to be at the highest risk across both time frames.

  • Those with a dementia diagnosis were noted to be at the lowest risk across both time frames.

  • Individuals with substance use disorders showed an increase in risk estimates over the timeframes and those with sleep disturbance and discharged against medical advice showed a decrease.
