Shared genetics of asthma and mental health disorders: A large-scale genome-wide cross-trait analysis
European Respiratory Journal Oct 25, 2019
Zhu Z, Zhu X, Liu CL, et al. - In this large-scale genome-wide cross-trait association study, researchers focused on shared genetic and the causal connection between asthma and mental health disorders (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorder (ANX), autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, eating disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD), posttraumatic stress disorder, and schizophrenia). They analyzed a sample size of 7,556 to 446,032, to determine genetic overlap between asthma from UK Biobank and 8 mental health disorders from Psychiatric Genomics Consortium. Shared genetics and potential causal associations between asthma and three mental health disorders (ADHD, ANX, and MDD) were discovered in this study. Potential novel biological functions that are in common among them were suggested by such shared genetics. Gene expression in major tissues pertaining to exocrine/endocrine, digestive, respiratory and hemic/immune system was regulated by the identified variants, as found in functional analysis.
