Sexual risk behaviors and STDs among persons who inject drugs: A national study

Preventive Medicine Jul 18, 2019

Brookmeyer KA, et al. - Researchers determined the prevalence of risky sexual behaviors and STD diagnoses among persons who inject drugs (PWID) using the National Survey of Family Growth (2011–2015). Ever engaging in injection-related behaviors was reported by 1.4% of women and 2.6% of men in 2011–2015. Increased odds of engaging in injection-related behaviors were found in women in relation to sex with a PWID in the past 12 months, exchanging money/drugs for sex in the past 12 months, chlamydia and/or gonorrhea diagnosis in the past 12 months, ever having a syphilis diagnosis, and ever having a herpes diagnosis, as revealed on examining full logistic regression models. Sex with a PWID in the past 12 months, ever being diagnosed with syphilis, and ever being diagnosed with herpes were significantly associated with higher odds of engaging in injection-related behaviors in men.
